Creativity and Screen Time: Finding Balance in the Digital Era

Hi, I’m Leanne Tran, and I’ve spent nearly two decades working with families to help their children thrive. As both a psychologist and a parent, I understand the challenges of balancing technology use and encouraging creativity in our kids. Let me share some insights and strategies to make this journey a little easier.

The Role of Technology in Creativity and Communication

Technology often gets a bad rap, but it’s not all bad—in fact, it can be transformative. I’ve seen it become a powerful tool for creativity and communication, particularly for children who face challenges such as severe autism or other communication barriers.

For instance, I’ve worked with children who use video clips to express their emotions and needs. These tools give them a voice when traditional means fall short. Similarly, talk-to-text applications empower kids with ADHD or autism, allowing them to share their creativity without the physical challenge of writing. It’s amazing to see how technology can open doors for kids to explore their potential.

Setting Boundaries: A Family-Centred Approach

While technology is a wonderful tool, I’ve learned that boundaries are essential. Each family is different, and it’s important to create guidelines that suit your child’s needs and personality. Some children might thrive with more freedom, while others benefit from clearer limits.

The key is moderation. Technology should support creativity and learning without overshadowing other aspects of life. Encourage your kids to step away from screens regularly and engage in activities that nurture their well-being. This balance not only enriches their creativity but also helps them build healthy habits.

The Power of Creativity Beyond Screens

I can’t stress enough the importance of creativity outside the digital realm. Some of the most fulfilling moments come from hobbies that are just for the joy of it—not for likes, shares, or public consumption. Whether it’s painting, crafting, or writing, having a personal creative outlet can be deeply rewarding.

This advice applies to us as parents too. Personally, I find it incredibly grounding to have projects that are purely mine. In a world filled with constant feedback and critique, these private moments of creativity are a sanctuary for mental health.

Final Thoughts: The Golden Age of Creativity

We’re living in a time where education and creativity are more accessible than ever. There are countless online resources, from video tutorials to downloadable patterns, that can ignite a creative spark in you and your children. Explore these together, and you might be surprised by what you discover.

Ultimately, integrating technology into daily life in a way that reflects your family’s values is key. By fostering creativity, setting thoughtful boundaries, and using technology as a tool, we can create an environment where our children flourish—both on and off the screen.
