Ep. 8: Aggression and Defiance (Managing behaviour series)
In this episode of the "Managing Behavior Series," I discuss strategies for dealing with defiant or aggressive behaviour in children. It's a challenging situation for parents, but understanding and addressing these behaviours is essential.
First, I highlighted that it’s important to recognize that some level of defiance is normal as children grow and become more independent. However, monitor how often it occurs and if it's becoming a significant issue. Stress can also trigger such behaviours.
I discussed addressing defiance and aggression involving setting clear expectations and giving effective instructions. I talked about ensuring your child is listening and providing concise, distraction-free guidance. Importantly, maintain your composure and prioritise safety during challenging moments.
I also discussed how building positive behaviour is key. Fostering open communication with your child, understanding their perspective is important. Teaching essential skills like communication and problem-solving. Remembering that behaviour often serves as a form of communication, so that it helps your child find healthier ways to express themselves, is discussed in great detail in this episode.
For children with special needs like ADHD, how to tailor your approach to their specific challenges is greatly mentioned. Learning about their condition and considering sensory regulation techniques is expressed in detail.
So, let’s dive straight into today’s episode and discover the strategies to help you foster a healthy child.
