Episode 16: Cognitive Assessments
In today’s episode, I will delve into the topic of cognitive assessments – a subject that will frequently arise in my conversations with parents. Drawing on my experience as a psychologist, I aim to shed light on the significance of these assessments for parents navigating the complexities of their child's development.
I will explore the reasons why parents might consider cognitive assessments. First, for those concerned about their child's developmental milestones, especially crucial for younger children. Second, when children will face challenges in day-to-day tasks or encounter difficulties in their school learning journey. Lastly, I will highlight how cognitive assessments can provide valuable insights for parents when their child comprehends information but struggles to express it adequately.
Moving on, I will stress the critical importance of consulting with a psychologist before proceeding with a cognitive assessment. Factors such as mental health challenges, anxiety, or significant life changes should be considered to ensure the appropriateness of the assessment.
Next, I will introduce the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC), a common tool used by psychologists to measure five key cognitive abilities. These abilities include verbal comprehension, visual spatial skills, fluid reasoning, working memory, and processing speed, tailored to a child's learning journey.
In conclusion, I will summarise that while cognitive assessments provide valuable insights, success in a child's life goes beyond school performance. I will encourage parents to understand their child's unique strengths and challenges, empowering them to navigate the assessment process effectively.
