Ep. 11: Problem Solving
In this engaging podcast episode, I'd like to share my passion for improving the parenting experience and nurturing happy, well-adjusted children. My primary focus here is on cultivating essential life skills, such as emotional regulation and problem-solving, in kids.
I will emphasize that parenting isn't a race and encourage parents to invest time in ensuring their children acquire these crucial abilities, which will serve them well as they grow older.
I will discuss the significance of problem-solving and why it follows emotional regulation in the child's developmental journey. Timing is crucial; rushing to solve problems when children are emotionally distressed is counterproductive. Emotional regulation should come first.
I will introduce a problem-solving technique from the Westmead Feelings program, designed for autistic children but applicable to all kids. This technique involves three key steps: identifying the problem, gauging the associated emotions and their intensity, brainstorming solutions (evaluating them as good or not-so-good), and ultimately choosing the best solution.
A novel aspect of my discussion is the application of this problem-solving technique to managing big emotions. When kids experience overwhelming feelings, this itself can be seen as a problem they need to solve. By applying the same technique to big emotions, parents can help their children manage and cope with these intense feelings more effectively.
I will end by inviting parents to provide feedback about their experiences using this technique with their kids. It's a comprehensive, insightful, and practical guide for parents aiming to support their children's emotional development and problem-solving abilities.
