Ep. 14: School Refusal
In today’s episode, I want to discuss school refusal, a complex issue I've faced as a parent and a psychologist. School refusal varies, and it's more common among neurodivergent and learning-disabled children. Today, I'll explore its reasons, approaches to help, and advice for parents.
What factors could contribute to school refusal? Are there school-related issues like a general dislike, friendship problems, or bullying involved? Can strong friendships serve as a protective factor? Are learning challenges, language disorders, sensory difficulties, ADHD, or autism potential causes?
When it comes to addressing school refusal, is collaboration among teachers, parents, and students crucial? How can we ensure that children feel safe at school? Should we focus on identifying and tackling the underlying challenges? Is open communication a key component?
In moments when a child refuses to go to school, should we aim to understand their anxiety-based responses? Is staying calm, simplifying tasks, and providing comfort and empathy effective in these situations? I’ll be answering all of these questioning in a profitable way, so let’s dive into today’s episode.
