Episode 77: The Communication Reset: Words That Transform Behaviour

How can you strengthen the parent-child bond during the holidays? As the school holidays wind down in Queensland, how can you make the most of this time with your kids? Is it possible to balance quality bonding moments with the inevitable challenges of daily life? In this episode, I reflect on how simple activities, like baking cakes or spending unstructured time together, can build deeper connections—despite the occasional messy kitchen!

Have you ever thought about how your words affect your child’s emotions and behaviour? What happens to a child’s ability to process language and problem-solve when they’re upset? In this episode, we explore the power of language choices, discussing why phrases like “Stop yelling” or “Why did you do that?” can escalate stress and how using fewer, more empathetic words can calm situations effectively.

Do you know which words or phrases might unintentionally trigger your child? Are there better ways to phrase your instructions or reactions? I share examples of common triggering phrases and provide alternatives that focus on active listening and emotional validation. Discover how saying “I see you’re upset” instead of “You’re being naughty” can transform conflicts into opportunities for connection.

What does respectful communication look like, and how can you model it for your kids? Are you aware of how your own responses shape their behaviour? We discuss practical tips for building a family communication style that fosters trust and understanding, ensuring that your children feel seen, heard, and supported.
